Web Home Page: Garcia State Forest lies within the Langeberg and is managed principally to protect the water catchment area and the great diversity of montane fynbos (heath) species that occur here. The animal life in this 12 000 ha reserve is scarce, but includes the seldom-seen leopard, caracal and honey badger, as well as grey rhebok and Cape grysbok. Bird species such as black eagle, rock kestrel, and malachite and orange-breasted sunbirds are often seen. Location: South-central part of the province; north of Riversdal. Access: From Riversdale take the R323 towards Ladismith as far as Garcia's Pass and the old Toll House. Footpaths into the reserve leave from this historical monument. Permits are required and are controlled by Grootvadersbos State Forest. Accommodation: None. Other facilities: An extensive network of trails and footpaths. Open: May close during the summer months due to fire risk; contact the State Forester. Opening time: Sunrise to sunset.
